How to Become a Rescue 3 Instructor: A Step-by-Step Guide to the Training and Assessment Process

Becoming a Rescue 3 Instructor: The Pathways Explained

At R3 Safety and Rescue, we provide world-class Rescue 3 certified training to individuals and teams across various industries. To maintain high training standards, Rescue 3  instructors are well-prepared, experienced, and thoroughly assessed before they begin teaching. Whether you want to become an Agency Instructor or an Independent Instructor, the Rescue 3 pathways help you achieve your goals. Let’s explore the two main routes: the Agency Instructor and Independent Instructor pathways.

1. Agency Instructor Pathway

This pathway suits those who plan to deliver Rescue 3 courses within their agencies, such as fire services, rescue teams, or emergency response units. The process includes several steps to prepare instructors to train others effectively.

Prerequisites

To begin as an Agency Instructor, you first complete the required Rescue 3 student courses for the discipline you plan to teach. Specific courses (such as SRTI and RROI) also require you to complete the course above the one you wish to teach.  These courses provide essential knowledge and skills that instructors will later use in their own teaching.

Instructor Training

After completing the prerequisites, you attend the Rescue 3 Instructor Training course. This course helps you develop instructional skills, manage groups, teach complex technical content clearly, and assess students. The course also includes a review of your personal skills, with a detailed action plan to prepare for assessment.

Agency Instructor Assessment

After training, you attend the Agency Instructor Assessment. Here, experienced assessors evaluate your teaching skills, subject knowledge, and personal abilities. Passing this assessment certifies you to teach Rescue 3 courses within your own agency.

For specific courses e.g. Safe Working at Height Instructor, the training and assessment elements are combined into a single course. This format applies to courses that take three days or less to complete.

2. Independent Instructor Pathway

If you want to teach Rescue 3 courses commercially, the Independent Instructor pathway is your next step. You need to complete the Agency Instructor process before beginning this route.

Agency Instructor Experience

Before becoming an Independent Instructor, you gain experience teaching Rescue 3 courses as an Agency Instructor. You’ll also complete an instructor workbook and submit course outlines and lesson plans. This experience enhances your confidence and skills as a technical rescue instructor.

Independent Instructor Assessment

Once you have the required experience, you attend the Independent Instructor Assessment. This assessment tests your ability to teach Rescue 3 courses independently for commercial training providers. Passing this assessment qualifies you to deliver Rescue 3 courses commercially to a wide range of organisations.

3. Rescue 3 Europe Training Providers

Organisations that want to deliver Rescue 3 certified courses need to apply for Rescue 3 Europe Training Provider status.  This ensures that as well as using Rescue 3 Instructors to deliver courses they have suitable training facilities, equipment and health & safety procedures in place to deliver quality training.  If the organisation you will be teaching for is not already a Rescue 3 Europe Training Provider they will need to complete this process before you can deliver Rescue 3 certified training. More information is available by visiting Rescue 3 Europe.
